Francesca loves Thailand since he was small and this year finally managed to bring also his Lorenzo, five years. Here is the first part of their adventure in the “Land of Smiles” with all the practical advice to organize a trip with children.
Thailand with children: the land of smiles
If you search for “Thailand” in the search engines one of the first information that you are going to gain will be the motto of the country … “The land of smiles”. Thailand is so, is the country of the smiles … The smile of the people, their way of being friendly place your hands and greet the guest: “Sawadee”.
Thailand with child Lorenzo in Samet
My trip (actually, my travels) in Thailand began long before the arrival of Lorenzo, thanks to a great passion of my parents for 11 years shall show at least once a year in South East Asia.
And Thailand, for them, is a must-see and the applicant. Before the arrival of my little traveler was already in the beautiful land of Siam to 4 times, always alternating, as I like it, places already lived (and loved) in places “new”.
But in the six years I spent with my husband and my little traveler had never been able to “take” (yes, the tour operator family is me!) In one of my favorite countries.

Finally, in 2014, my husband and I learn that one of the conferences in which we go every year will take place just in Bangkok, in February (one of the most enjoyable ever for those visiting the Land of Smiles). What better opportunity to organize an expedition in my beloved Thai? We are associated with a colleague with her husband and teenage daughter and my parents (who actually were already walking independently in South East Asia for a few weeks).
Ready, set, go!
Thailand with children: our tour
Traveling through an occasion not really playful, and full of work commitments that go away for a long time becomes difficult, we decided to limit the trip to about ten days.
Geographical map and guidebook in hand, we understand immediately that is not the case of “breaking” the journey taking domestic flights. It will therefore remain in the Bangkok area.
Thailand with children-Rayong
The route is easily done: thanks to a rate of opening, I book three rooms at Rayong Marriott brand, a modern but well integrated which has the advantage of being on the sea, a few kilometers from the beautiful island of Koh Samet, a little less two-hour drive from Bangkok and an hour from the capital of vice Pattaya. The rate is very convenient because with about 80 euro per night we accappariamo a superior room with breakfast and free internet. We do not ask for extra cot for our baby as the two Queen actually have a dimension that touches the bed home!
The rest of the trip we spend in Bangkok, where the hotel offer is not lacking for sure.

Even here I try the most with the least money and find another Marriott brand new offering promotional rates must. Still 80 euro per night for a five-star rate also includes the internet and five meals a day in the Executive Lounge; also convenient as a short walk from the SkyTrain, subway fast.
Thailand with children-Marriot Bangkok
On another occasion I will tell you what we saw and did, to give you some small preview I say that we loved the wild beaches and the beautiful sea of Koh Samet, we went shopping and we have given away an evening rock nell’incasinatissima Pattaya, we visited temples, aquariums and modern attractions in the controversial Bangkok …
Always keeping in mind the needs and tastes of our little explorer!
Thailand with children: the flight
Organizing our trip, unfortunately we granted the fact that you have the specific dates and inflexible. Luckily we came to meet the Turkish Airlines the company line that Turkish is distinguishing one of the best in Europe, and that we have experienced in the past for a short-haul flight to Turkey.
For about 600 Euros, we bought tickets from Venice to Bangkok with a stop over in Istanbul to return, where we were able to organize a mini tour of the city for our traveling companions that there had never been (but I will I tell you another time).

The Turkish did not disappoint, in fact. Gadgets for Everyone on each flight (tin box decorated with case and inside toothbrush, socks, lip gloss, mask), coloring booklet for Lorenzo, good food (considering that we are on the plane and not in a starred restaurant).
Other companies that often offer excellent fare for Thailand (all tested by my parents!): Emirates, Qatar, Thai, Austrian, Lufthansa, Swiss, Singapore Airlines. For those leaving from Malpensa and Fiumicino, add Etihad and Oman.
Thailand Children: internal transport
We are lucky, the long experience of my parents allowed us to create a network of contacts for private transportation (taxi drivers officers who means most places, from cars to classic mini van). All prices have been agreed and contracted before.
Bangkok is well served by the SkyTrain.
There are plenty of taxis but beware, the traffic is really “crazy” and exhausting, as the worst cities. The hotel still organize transport to measure and you can call for taxis or transport companies.
Thailand Children: overnight
Thailand really offers accommodation for every taste and every budget, and in my opinion is one of the destinations with the highest value ever. Here it is to you and the type of traveler you are.
The backpackers can really sleep for a few Euros per night in accommodation still decent. I, despite not having some kind of disposable income, I’d rather spend a little ‘more and have an extra comfortable accommodation and level (remember that we are in an emerging country!).
Thailand with children-Marriot Rayong
What you’d pay for a two star in Milan is a deluxe hotel in one of the best quoted Bangkok, obviously careful with offers and comparing the different booking sites.
This even more so, of course, when I travel with my children, which I try to provide a consistently high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
Thailand Children: lunches and dinners
For food, the reasoning is the same as the night. In Thailand you will find everything and more, and will be your choice to spend very little or a little ‘more, but for an experience of the highest level. In our travels, we like to switch this and that.
A bit ‘of street food “selected” (meat to grill, fresh fruit, …) and some nice dinner by the river Chao Praia in Bangkok; a hamburger “loud” at the Hard Rock Cafe and Australian meat grilled with lots of live concert in the little known Rayong.
Again, no problem for our five-year-which was pampered from start to finish by the wonderful Thai people.
